On a seemingly daily basis we read about cyber attacks bringing down large organisations, both here in New Zealand and around the world.
In the past 12 months some of those impacted by these attacks include the Waikato DHB, NZ Post, the IRD, Kiwibank, ANZ, Lumino and Vocus.
An assumption that many small business owners make is that cyber criminals are only interested in targeting large organisations, therefore they’re at low risk of being hacked, but unfortunately the statistics say otherwise.
Last year almost half of all cyber attacks involved small businesses and 20% of those had to close shop within 6 months.
Many of these attacks could have been prevented had these businesses followed “best practice” security protocols. With the vast majority of all cyber attacks now coming in via our email systems it’s now imperative to have systems in place that identify and remove threats before they have a chance to cause damage. Today IT security requires a multifaceted approach and should include network protection, e-mail filtering, password management, data and email backup, patch management, multi-factor authentication and most importantly end user education.
